Air Circus
Describe your music in three words
Fun, energetic and collaborative
Tell us about the self titled new album! How would you describe the vibe of the album, is there a concept?
The album follows the events of a fictional airship in the sky. It acts as an allegory for consumerist culture, exploring themes of escapism, vanity and over consumption, which ultimately leads to the downfall of the ship. It’s inspired by works such as Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Howls Moving Castle’, and Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach. It has a laid back, indie alternative vibe, with elements of hip hop and electronic influences, with an amazing line-up of collaborators.
How do you feel your sound has changed since your first release in 2018?
Well for starters, there's two of us now! The music definitely started off as a solo acoustic project, but now with the both of us, we have experimented with so many different genres of music and collaborated with various musicians and artists that we feel our overall persona has grown into something much bigger and collaborative. We are very proud of how the project has developed over the past 3 years, and can’t wait to see where it goes next!
Who creates your artwork/videos?
Our visual team consists of Peter Adrian who does our animation and illustration. Our single covers for our latest releases has been done by the amazing tattoo artist Janky Studios (and Air Conditioning Vol.1 mixtape artwork by Henry Rawlings). And as for our videos, it’s mainly shot and edited by ourselves.
Your album features several awesome collaborations, what appealed about each artist you worked with?
We wanted to work with local musicians that we had watched in the past, so being a fan of their work, we reached out to them to see if they would be interested in collaborating on the album. The majority of the album was recorded over summer 2020, and of course with the various restrictions, we set up a studio in our back gardens to record the tracks. Everyone we collabed with had such a great energy and experimenting with ideas hours on end was an absolute blast. Be sure to check out the music of all the artists featured on the album!
Following on from the last question, if you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?
We’d love to work with any upcoming artists. We find that working with others, helping each other out, really makes the music making process a lot more enjoyable. We love going to local shows and finding new musicians to collab with, everyone brings something new to the table, and we just love the different directions that they can take the music.
What inspires you?
Madlib, Radiohead, Gorillaz and Korean Town Odyssey
If you could’ve written one song(or indeed album) by another artist, what would it be?
Tomorrows Dust – Tame Impala
Name a couple of other local acts we should check out
Workin’ Man Noise Unit, Self Help, Katie King
